What to compare, and in what order

This is not a ranking of insurers. It is the specification to hold every plan against, so a cheaper premium means a cheaper policy rather than a thinner one.

How this table is built.
  • Ordered by consequence: the items where being wrong costs the most come first.
  • Nothing in this table is paid placement, and no insurer is named.
  • Each row states what to check and why, not which option is 'best'.
  • Where practice varies by insurer, the row says so rather than generalising.
What to checkWhy it mattersWhat a thin plan doesWhere to confirm
Plan type — accident-only vs. accident + illness vs. accident + illness + wellnessDecides what categories of cost are covered at allSold as accident-only while implying broader coverThe plan's declarations page and sample policy
Annual vs. per-incident deductibleChanges whether the deductible resets once a year or per conditionUses per-incident without stating it clearlyAsk the insurer directly, in writing
Reimbursement percentageDecides your share of every eligible bill after the deductibleAdvertises a high percentage paired with a high deductibleRun a real bill through the reimbursement calculator
Annual payout capThe ceiling on what the plan ever pays back in a policy yearSets a cap too low for a large-breed or chronic condition claimCompare the cap against a realistic worst-case bill
Waiting periods — accident, illness and condition-specificCoverage isn't active for a claim type until its waiting period passesStates 'waiting periods apply' without giving exact day countsAsk for the exact number of days in writing
Pre-existing condition definitionDecides whether a past symptom permanently excludes a future diagnosisApplies the exclusion broadly without a curable-condition pathRead the sample policy's exact wording
Breed-specific exclusions or sub-limitsSome plans cap or exclude conditions statistically linked to certain breedsDoesn't disclose a breed-specific limit until claim timeAsk specifically if you own a breed with a known risk pattern
Total annual cost including any wellness add-onThe monthly premium alone hides add-on fees and payment chargesQuotes the base premium only, without the add-on costAsk for the full annual cost in writing

This tells you what to compare. It cannot tell you which plan is best for your specific pet, because that depends on how each insurer's underwriting reads your pet's individual profile — which is only knowable by getting an actual quote.
